NWBC Names New Executive Director

NWBC or the National Women’s Business Council recently namedDana Lewis as its most recent Executive Director. As the new exec, Lewis will be in charged of overseeing the daily business of the council. The National Women’s Business Council is a a bi-partisan Federal government council that serves as an independent source of advice and counsel to the President, Congress, and the U.S. Small Business Administration on economic issues of importance to women business owners.

The council was established in 1988, and back then it only served as an advisory body of women business owners about business success barriers that reports to the President and Congress. In 1994, the Small Business Reauthorization Act restructured the council to include both women business owners and representatives of women’s business organizations.

As for the new appointment, Lewis can’t be happier. “I am thrilled to be joining the National Women’s Business Council at this critical time for America’s small businesses.nearly 30 percent of small businesses are owned by women, and it is critical that we give women the tools they need to start and grow their firms and create jobs. I’m looking forward to working with the President and SBA Administrator Mills to advance the goals of women business owners across the country,” she said.

Lewis currently serves First Lady Michelle Obama as her Special Assistant and Personal Aide. She is the one responsible for scheduling the First Lady’s briefings, speeches, and public and private schedules. Prior to her current job, she was also part of the Obama presidential campaign as a part of the Presidential Inaugural Committee.

Lewis’ succesful career stared off in 1993 when she first served at Washington as a Senate Democratic Policy Committee intern. She has worked on various issues very close and important to women in America , from women’s rights, to education, labor, and health care policy.
